(KSL News) More than 45 million American adults smoke cigarettes. Today, the American Cancer Society is urging all of them to kick the habit.
It's part of what's called the Great American Smokeout, which is a national campaign to encourage smokers to quit for one day.
The American Cancer Society says 44 percent of smokers have attempted to quit for at least one day in the past year, and the smokeout event is a way to help them commit to quit for good.
Cigarette smoking is blamed for nearly 1 in 3 cancer deaths and 1 in 5 deaths overall.
Several community organizations are teaming up with the American Cancer Society for today's Great American Smokeout. You can ask an expert about quitting smoking, share your own smoking story and trade in your tobacco for something healthier at The Leonardo in downtown Salt Lake this afternoon.
Utah youth groups also have planned a march against tobacco use beginning at the Gateway at 4 p.m.
