CEDAR CITY, Utah (AP) -- Southern Utah University is cutting part-time jobs that help students pay for tuition.

Vice President for University Relations Dean O'Driscoll says students are being let go early from some seasonal jobs as the school copes with a 4-percent budget cut ordered by state lawmakers in an emergency September session.

SUU President Michael T. Benson says the state's universities and colleges probably will face another budget cut when lawmakers cobble together the next budget. They usually do that in March for the fiscal year that starts July 1.

Benson calls the prospect of additional cuts daunting.

University officials say they have to protect the school's core mission when making cuts, and student jobs are an easy target.

It wasn't immediately known how many student jobs were cut, or how many jobs are left.
