SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- Salt Lake County is implementing a hiring freeze for all county departments and agencies, including the mayor's office.

The freeze is part of a plan to trim about 5 percent from the work force of 4,000.

County Mayor Peter Corroon says eliminating 175 full-time positions can be done through attrition by next spring. He says the plan doesn't include layoffs in 2009.

Corroon says the move would save the county about $11 million, on top of another $11 million that's already been cut from the budget.

The plan allows some critical additions for the district attorney's office and sheriff's office.
