(KSL News) The Salt Lake City Council tonight will hear from the public on its master plan for transportation. It's a plan council members have worked for a couple of years.

This is a 20-year master plan that will steer the development of transportation in the core area downtown. It's called "Downtown in Motion."

The idea is to come up with the right blend of transportation to meet the changing needs of the community. For example, TRAX expansion is already happening, but residential growth in downtown will drive future decisions.

When people move downtown they say they want more pedestrian walkways and bike lanes. The city is already experimenting with this shared lane for bikes and cars. We'll likely see more in the near future.

The city council will also likely move up the development of streetcars. The mayor and community business leaders saw the great success of streetcars in Seattle and Portland on a recent trip to those cities, so they'll explore that option and get it rolling soon rather than wait several years.

The public hearing starts at seven, and the council could adopt "Downtown in Motion" tonight or do that at another time.
