OGDEN — A man who police say fired several rounds at a woman trying to run away from him — striking her at least once — was charged Tuesday with attempted murder.

About 12:35 a.m. on July 1, police responded to a report of a woman who had been shot at least once. Sergio Arturo Chavez, 41, of Ogden, fired at least two additional rounds at the woman as she ran away, according to charging documents.

Police served a search warrant on Chavez’s home and reported finding four guns. Because Chavez was determined to be in the country illegally, he is not allowed to possess firearms, the charges state. A fake identification card was also recovered, according to police.

An updated condition of the woman was not immediately available.

According to a press release issued by Ogden police on July 1, a second woman, 40, was also found deceased inside the house with gunshot wounds. Tuesday’s charging documents do not mention that woman.

Chavez is charged in 2nd District Court with attempted murder, a first-degree felony; four counts of being a restricted person in possession of a weapon, a second-degree felony; and possessing a forgery device, a third-degree felony.

During an initial appearance in court on Tuesday, a judge ordered Chavez held without bail.
