TOM HANKS TAKING IT DAY BY DAY AFTER COVID-19
NEW YORK (AP) — Tom Hanks says since getting — and recovering from — COVID-19, he's taking things day by day. He says he's had “an ongoing physiological maintenance" for his brain and body. The actor announced in March that he and his wife, Rita Wilson, had the new coronavirus. They recuperated in Australia — and since returning to the U.S., he has hosted a from-home episode of “Saturday Night Live” and released his new World War II naval drama “Greyhound” — though the movie went from being rolled out in theaters to being released on Apple TV+.
DONALD TRUMP TELL-ALL BOOK COMING OUT EARLY
NEW YORK (AP) — Talk about striking while the iron's hot. The publisher of a tell-all book about President Donald Trump is rushing the project out, now that it's cleared the legal hurdles blocking it. Simon & Schuster will release “Too Much and Never Enough: How My Family Created the World's Most Dangerous Man” a week from today. It was originally due out July 28. The publisher says the early release is because there's “extraordinary interest” in the book, written by Trump's niece, Mary. Her uncle Robert, the president's brother, tried to block release of the book. But the courts rejected his efforts.
PRESIDENT TRUMP ATTACKS NASCAR.
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Trump has taken a U-turn on NASCAR. He's ripping the racing group for banning the Confederate flag. It's one of a series of efforts to lash out at combatants in what he sees as a culture war. Trump also falsely accused the circuit's only Black driver, Bubba Wallace, of creating a “hoax” over a noose found in the garage he used at last month's race at Talladega. Truth is, Wallace never saw the noose in person; it was NASCAR, not Wallace, who reported the finding of the noose — and NASCAR and the FBI determined it was a noose. Wallace clapped back at Trump on Twitter, writing "Love should come naturally as people are TAUGHT to hate.” He added, “Even when it’s HATE from the POTUS .. Love wins.”
... AND CHANGES TO OFFENSIVE TEAM MASCOT NAMES
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says he doesn't want to see two pro sports teams change their offensive nicknames. The Washington Redskins of the NFL and the Cleveland Indians baseball team are on the verge of retiring their names amid the nation's growing “wokeness” on racism and cultural stereotypes. But Trump tweets the names evoke “STRENGTH" — and the teams are changing them “to be politically correct.” Trump's rant came the same day some Native American leaders wrote the NFL, urging it to force the Redskins to change their name.
COLIN KAEPERNICK T0 GET DOCUMENTARY TREATMENT
UNDATED (AP) — It’s unclear whether he will be throwing footballs for an NFL team again. But you will soon be able to see Colin Kaepernick on ESPN. He's the subject of documentary series to be produced by ESPN Films. The deal is in conjunction with Kap's production company, which teamed up with Disney for the project. Kaepernick was criticized by then-presidential candidate Donald Trump for kneeling during the national anthem to protest police brutality and racism. And after playing the 2006 season, he was shunned by the NFL. Since the death of George Floyd, Kaepernick's silent protest has been amplified by anti-racism demonstrations across the country and the world. The NFL has apologized for not supporting him — and the league is now among the corporations calling for changes in the way the nation deals with African Americans.
LOURVE REOPENS
PARIS (AP) — The Louvre Museum is back — but not quite back to business as usual. The iconic Paris museum has reopened to the public, four months after shutting down to stem the spread of the new coronavirus. To say people flocked to see attractions like the “Mona Lisa” yesterday would be wrong — because crowds are limited for now. And those who want to roam the halls can't just show up. Reservations are a must. So are masks.
COMEDIAN, ATLANTA RADIO HOST REPORTS HIS DAUGHTER HAS BEEN SHOT
HOUSTON (AP) — Atlanta-based radio host and comedian Rickey Smiley says his daughter is being treated at a Houston hospital after being shot. Smiley says it happened Sunday night when his youngest daughter, Aaryn, went out to grab a burger. He says she's fine and that he'll be in Houston while she recovers. Police are looking for the gunman.
