SALT LAKE CITY — Despite a string of fatal crashes leading up to the holiday weekend, the Utah Highway Patrol says there were no fatalities on the freeways over the 4th of July.
From Friday through Sunday, troopers made 2,946 traffic stops. Of those, 1,982 were for speeding, 54 people were arrested for investigation of DUI and 14 people were arrested for investigation of reckless driving.
However, there were zero fatal crashes. Right before the holiday weekend, however, seven people died in three separate crashes - including two triple-fatal incidents — on July 1 and 2.
Troopers worked extra shifts over the weekend conducting DUI enforcement as well as looking for distracted drivers, seat belt violations and motorists who speed.

During the first six months of 2020, troopers have issued 2,402 tickets to drivers going more than 100 mph. That’s compared to 1,816 during the same time period in 2019 and 1,798 in 2018.
