Utah sees 553 new cases of COVID-19, 4 new deaths

Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases has increased by 553 from Monday, with four new reported deaths, according to the Utah Department of Health. Tuesday's totals give Utah 22,217 total confirmed cases, with 1,444 total hospitalizations and 172 total deaths from the disease. Previously, there were 21,664 cases in the state. Fauci warns Congress that new US coronavirus cases could rise to 100,000 a day as country moves in 'wrong direction'

The U.S. is “going in the wrong direction” with the coronavirus surging badly enough that Dr. Anthony Fauci told senators Tuesday some regions are putting the entire country at risk — just as schools and colleges are wrestling with how to safely reopen. With about 40,000 new cases being reported a day, Fauci, the government’s top infectious disease expert, said he “would not be surprised if we go up to 100,000 a day if this does not turn around.” “I am very concerned,” he told a hearing of the Senate Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee. “We’ve got to get the message out that we are all in this together,” by wearing masks in public and keeping out of crowds, said Fauci, infectious disease chief at the National Institutes of Health. Top experts reasserted the importance of all citizens wearing a mask and governments increasing testing capacity in a unified national response instead of a piecemeal approach by states. Fauci said he was "cautiously optimistic" about vaccine development, but the increase in anti-vaccine sentiment may mean that a COVID-19 vaccine alone is not enough. —Associated Press

COVID-19 impacting Red Cross wildfire response

The American Red Cross is facing additional challenges and extra costs for wildfire evacuation centers due to the COVID-19 pandemic. As long as COVID-19 remains a factor, Red Cross officials said anyone going to an evacuation center should expect volunteers to keep them in their cars with a face mask while waiting for a quick check-up. — Mike Anderson, KSL TV

EU reopens its borders to 14 nations but not to US tourists

The European Union announced Tuesday that it will reopen its borders to travelers from 14 countries, but most Americans have been refused entry for at least another two weeks due to soaring coronavirus infections in the U.S. Travelers from other big countries like Russia, Brazil and India will also miss out. — Associated Press

EU to list which citizens can enter; US likely to miss out

The European Union on Tuesday is announcing a list of nations whose citizens will be allowed to enter 31 European countries, but most Americans are likely to be refused entry for at least another two weeks due to soaring coronavirus infections in the U.S. As Europe’s economies reel from the impact of the coronavirus, southern EU countries like Greece, Italy and Spain are desperate to entice back sun-loving visitors and breathe life into their damaged tourism industries. More than 15 million Americans are estimated to travel to Europe each year, while some 10 million Europeans head across the Atlantic. — Associated Press

At least 285 U.S. children have developed a serious inflammatory condition linked to the coronavirus and while most recovered, the potential for long-term or permanent damage is unknown, two new studies suggest.

A 4th District Court judge on Monday gave Utah County officials 48 hours to hand over documents revealing the names of two Utah County businesses that health officials had found were in violation of COVID-19 guidelines last month.

The Utah governor has given his seal of approval to the Utah State Board of Education’s requirements and recommendations for K-12 schools to reopen this fall — a document that addresses a host of issues ranging from social distancing to cafeteria practices.

Utah’s number of COVID-19 cases increased by 564 on Monday, with one new reported death.
