SALT LAKE CITY — Zach Pierce and his fiancé Helena Ekonomo were planning to have a large wedding later this year. But when they learned Zach's father, Mike, might not be well enough to make it, the couple rearranged their plans.
Mike Pierce, 48, of Draper has been in the Cardiac ICU at Intermountain Medical Center awaiting a heart transplant for more than a month, according to a hospital statement.
With COVID-19 making couples all over the world rearrange their wedding plans, it was a difficult task to figure out a way to have the wedding sooner rather than later while including additional family and friends. Luckily, the view from Mike Pierce's hospital room looked right onto the roof of the employee parking garage — which conveniently has a mountain backdrop.
On Friday night, Mike Pierce watched out the window of his hospital room and listened in on a Zoom feed as his son tied the knot in a "brief but beautiful ceremony." The couple and their friends and family were able to wave to Mike Piece in his room and read "love you guys" written on his window.
If watching his son start the newest chapter of his life wasn't enough to make Mike Pierce grateful, he also found out he is now healthy enough to receive a heart transplant. He is currently high on the transplant list, according to Intermountain Medical Center.
