LOGAN — Logan officials announced the cancellation of the city’s Pioneer Day parade and celebration Thursday morning — the latest in a string of summer events around the state canceled because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The parade and celebration was scheduled to take place on July 24 at Willow Park.

“The cancellation comes as a result of disruption to the planning for the Pioneer Day Celebration, current recommendations regarding social distancing at mass gatherings and public events and financial impact to event sponsors,” city officials wrote on the Logan Facebook page Thursday morning.

Also canceled in July is Salt Lake’s Days of ’47 celebration, Bountiful Handcart Days, the Deseret News Marathon and Salt Lake’s annual arts festival in June. Organizers for Ogden Pioneer Days, another major July event, have yet to reach a decision on whether it will be held.

America’s Freedom Festival at Provo also canceled its summer events, however, organizers will still hold a fireworks show on July 4 in honor of essential workers and first responders. The show will be visible to those wishing to social distance, according to a press release.

The Utah State Fair, held Sept. 10-20 at the Utah State Fairpark in Salt Lake City, is still being held, though officials said they are closely monitoring the situation surrounding COVID-19 and will adapt as necessary.
