University of Utah plans to resume in-person learning this fall

The University of Utah plans to resume on-campus classes this fall, albeit with modifications to ensure safety of students, employees and visitors. U. spokesman Christopher Nelson said the university is working on multiple scenarios for fall, “designed to deliver on-campus, in-person experiences that make the college years memorable for a lifetime.” You can find more information about this update here. — Marjorie Cortez, KSL

Mexican Consulate of SLC partners with health officials to provide free coronavirus tests on Friday for the uninsured

The Consulate of Mexico in Salt Lake City is partnering with the University of Utah Wellness Bus, the Utah Department of Health, and the Victor's Event Center to offer free coronavirus tests on Friday. The event will be held at the Victor's Event Center, 2537 S. 3270 W., in West Valley City, from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The center will provide drive-thru testing for individuals inside vehicles. Tests are intended for the uninsured, and appointments must be scheduled. To schedule an appointment, call either 801-747-9547, 801-413-3248, or the bilingual line at 801-436-7118.

Additional streets reopening to recreation in Salt Lake City

Starting Tuesday, 800 East (from 700 S to 1700 S) and Kensington Ave (from 700 E to 1650 E) will temporarily reopen to community recreation such as biking and walking, Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall announced on Monday. 129 new coronavirus cases reported, 1 new death

As Utah celebrated Memorial Day amid the pandemic, 129 new cases of coronavirus and one new death was reported by the Utah Department of Health. Monday’s totals give Utah 8,521 total confirmed cases, with 692 total hospitalizations and 98 total deaths from the disease. The woman who died was a Cache County resident over the age of 85, the Utah Department of Health stated. The total number of cases reported by the health department includes all cases of COVID-19 since Utah’s outbreak began, including those who are infected now, those who have recovered from the disease and those who have died. — Katie Workman, KSL.com

Memorial Day even more poignant as veterans die from virus

This year's Memorial Day will pay tribute not only to those who died on the battlefield but more recent fallen soldiers. And in a reminder of the way coronavirus has transformed American lives and traditions, many of the usual Memorial Day gatherings have been either canceled or curtailed — mindful of the pandemic that has already killed more than 90,000 people in the U.S. It's making the situation even more painful for the relatives of those veterans who have died from the virus.

Trump threatens to move Republican National Convention if NC Governor doesn't ease coronavirus restrictions

President Donald Trump threatened Monday to pull the Republican National Convention out of North Carolina if the state’s Democratic governor doesn’t immediately sign off on allowing a full-capacity gathering in August despite the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. Trump’s tweets about the RNC, planned for Charlotte, come just two days after North Carolina recorded its largest daily increase in positive cases yet. Trump said that Republicans “must be immediately given an answer by the Governor as to whether or not the space will be allowed to be fully occupied. If not, we will be reluctantly forced...to find, with all of the jobs and economic development it brings, another Republican National Convention site.” Cooper’s office responded with a brief statement that state officials are working with the GOP on convention decisions. “State health officials are working with the RNC and will review its plans as they make decisions about how to hold the convention in Charlotte,” Cooper spokeswoman Dory MacMillan said in an email. “North Carolina is relying on data and science to protect our state’s public health and safety.” — Associated Press

Lock your car: thefts rise amid quarantine

With more people than ever staying home to lessen the spread of COVID-19, their sedans, pickup trucks and SUVs are parked unattended on the streets, making them easy targets for opportunistic thieves. Despite silent streets and nearly non-existent traffic, vehicle larcenies shot up 63% in New York and nearly 17% in Los Angeles from Jan. 1 through mid-May, compared with the same period last year. And many other law enforcement agencies around the U.S. are reporting an increase in stolen cars and vehicle burglaries, even as violent crime has dropped dramatically nationwide in the coronavirus pandemic. Salt Lake City Police Det. Greg Wilking said a 22% spike in vehicle burglaries there could be from a few criminals working quickly on “car prowls.” “It’s really 10 seconds," he said. “They’re not spending a lot of time in your car. It’s a smash-and-grab-and-go,” sometimes in broad daylight. — Associated Press

Laid-off workers face 1st deadlines in getting health insurance under the ACA

Many laid-off workers who lost health insurance in the coronavirus shutdown soon face the first deadlines to qualify for fallback coverage under the Affordable Care Act. Taxpayer-subsidized health insurance is available for a modest cost — sometimes even free — across the country, but industry officials and independent researchers say few people seem to know how to find it. For those who lost their health insurance as layoffs mounted at the end of March, a 60-day “special enrollment” period for individual coverage under the ACA closes next week in most states. The nonpartisan Kaiser Family Foundation estimates that nearly 27 million workers and family members had lost job-based health coverage as of the start of this month, a number now likely higher with unemployment claims rising. In a counter-intuitive finding, Kaiser’s study also estimated that nearly 8 in 10 of the newly uninsured would likely qualify for some sort of coverage under former President Barack Obama’s health law, either a private plan like Franklin found, or Medicaid. — Associated Press

US faces a Memorial Day like no other

Americans prepared to mark a Memorial Day like no other as the coronavirus pandemic upended traditional commemorations. U.S. authorities warned beach-goers to heed social distancing rules to avoid a resurgence of the virus that has infected 5.4 million people worldwide and killed over 345,000, including nearly 100,000 Americans, according to a tally by Johns Hopkins University. Veterans, along with nursing home residents, have made up a significant portion of those who died in the U.S. outbreak. After two days of playing golf, President Donald Trump is scheduled to make Memorial Day appearances at Arlington National Cemetery, where he will lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, and then heads off to speak at a historic fort in Baltimore. —Associated Press
