CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — Clemson's top returning receiver Justyn Ross will have surgery on his shoulder next month. Team spokesman Ross Taylor said the operation will take care of concerns that cropped up during the Tigers' spring practice sessions in March. Ross said the surgery is likely to take place early next month. Ross will be a junior next season. He led the team with 66 catches that went for 865 yards and eight touchdowns. The 6-foot-4 Ross is considered a first-round NFL draft pick should he decide to turn pro after his junior year.

UNDATED (AP) — A century ago, college sports in the United States was hit hard by the Spanish flu pandemic. Games were canceled and some schools were forced to call off their seasons. Jeremy Swick is a historian at the College Football Hall of Fame. He says those tough times in 1918 and 1919 helped set the stage for a decade of growth by college football in the Roaring '20s. Georgia Tech history professor Johnny Smith also says there were lessons to be learned about social distancing.

SYRACUSE, N.Y. (AP) — Syracuse men’s lacrosse coach John Desko has been elected to the National Lacrosse Hall of Fame. A two-time national coach of the year, Desko has won five national championships since taking over in 1999. He has a record of 258-86-0 and keeps a school streak alive _ all four head coaches in the history of the men’s program have been elected to the Hall of Fame. Following the conclusion of his playing career at Syracuse in 1979, Desko joined the coaching staff and was part of six NCAA championships as an assistant.
