SALT LAKE CITY — A 19-year-old woman was shot in the leg early Saturday morning while watching an illegal street race in an industrial park in western Salt Lake City.

She was watching the race near 3455 W. Ninigret Dr. when she realized she'd been shot about 12:30 a.m. Saturday, according to Salt Lake City Police Lt. Brett Olsen.

"She heard shots get fired, and then she noticed she was shot in the leg," Olsen said. "We don't know who, we don't know where it came from."

Olsen said her injuries are not believed to be life-threatening "at all." He said the woman went home before visiting several different hospitals overnight.

Street racing has been a problem in the area, Olsen said. "It's out there in the industrial area, so nobody's there at night," he said. "Big, empty parking lots and wide, empty roads."

"Maybe they've watched a little too much 'Fast and Furious' in their day," he joked.

Olsen said police are working with local property owners to get surveillance footage of the area.
