3 charged in killing of Michigan store security guard over virus mask

A woman, her adult son and husband have been charged in the fatal shooting of a security guard who refused to let her daughter enter a Family Dollar in Michigan because she wasn't wearing a face mask to protect against transmission of the coronavirus. Calvin Munerlyn was shot Friday at the store just north of downtown Flint a short time after telling Sharmel Teague’s daughter she had to leave because she lacked a mask, according to Genesee County Prosecutor David Leyton. Teague, 45, argued with Munerlyn, 43, before leaving. Two men later came to the store. Teague; her husband, Larry Teague, 44; and Ramonyea Bishop, 23; are charged with first-degree premeditated murder and gun charges. — Associated Press

World leaders pledge billions for virus vaccine research

World leaders, organizations andbanks on Monday pledged 7.4 billion euros ($8 billion) for research to find a vaccine against the new coronavirus, but warned that it is just the start of an effort that must be sustained over time to beat the disease. The funds, pledged at a video-conference summit hosted by the European Union, fell marginally short of the 7.5 billion euros being sought, but more money could arrive in coming days. Notably absent from the event was the United States, where more than 67,000 people have died, and Russia. Despite the shortfall, U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, the target being sought Monday to help find a vaccine, new treatments and better tests for the disease would only ever amount to a “down-payment” on the tools that will be needed to fight the virus. — Associated Press

Meatpackers cautiously reopen plants amid coronavirus fears

A South Dakota pork processing plant took its first steps toward reopening Monday after being shuttered for over two weeks because of a coronavirus outbreak that infected more than 800 employees. Employees reporting for work in Smithfield Foods' ground pork department filed through a tent where they were screened for fever and other signs of COVID-19. Some said they felt the measures Smithfield has taken would protect them from another virus outbreak, while others were not confident that infections could be halted in a crowded plant. — Associated Press

Italy lets millions back to work, US restrictions easing up

Italy started stirring Monday, with millions allowed back to work as Europe’s longest coronavirus lockdown started easing, while the U.S. took halting steps to lift some restrictions even as tens of thousands of new cases were reported every day. In Washington, the Senate convened for the first time since March. The Supreme Court heard arguments by telephone and allowed the world to listen in live — for the first time ever. Dozens in Florida waited before sunrise for the 7 a.m. opening of Clearwater Beach. And a shuttered pork processing plant in South Dakota took its first steps toward reopening after more than 800 employees were infected with the coronavirus. — Associated Press

Coronavirus model projects 134,000 deaths in US, nearly double its last estimate

An influential coronavirus model often cited by the White House is now forecasting that 134,000 people will die of Covid-19 in the United States, nearly double its previous prediction. The model, from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, had previously predicted 72,433 deaths as of Monday morning. Relatedly, a Trump administration model projects a rise in coronavirus cases and deaths in the weeks ahead, up to about 3,000 daily deaths in the US by June 1, according to an internal document obtained by The New York Times. Over the past week, about 2,000 people died daily in the US, according to data from Johns Hopkins University. — CNN

Some national parks in Utah moving to open to day use

Some of Utah’s five national parks plan to open for day use and some overnight stays amid loosening restrictions in the state’s response to the coronavirus pandemic. Beginning Tuesday, Capitol Reef National Park will open for day use in the south district at Waterpocket Fold and allow overnight stays in the Cedar Mesa campground. Day use will also be permitted in the park at Cathedral Valley in the north district and overnight stays are permitted in the campground. — Amy Joi O'Donoghue, KSL

As state relaxes virus rules, judges to weigh restarting jury trials later on

A group of judges from each level of Utah’s court system will soon get to work on a plan to safely handle jury trials and other proceedings during the pandemic, possibly allowing for virtual verdicts. Utah Supreme Court Chief Justice Matthew Durrant issued a Friday order directing a group of seven judges — three from rural Utah and three from urban parts of the state, plus an appeals court judge — to hash out the plan. His directive comes after the state on Friday relaxed some restrictions on businesses and allowed gatherings to grow from a maximum of 10 up to 20 people. — Annie Knox, KSL

Salt Lake County Health Department launches food service site, ask for donations/volunteers

Due to increased demand on soup kitchens and food pantries, Salt Lake County Health Department in partnership with tech developers AQUEHS Corp launched FeedUT.org this week, which shows residents where the nearest foodservice organizations are. “We developed FeedUT.org to help families in our own neighborhoods access healthy, nutritious foods,” said Anni McKinnon, the healthy living program manager for the county. “But when the pandemic began directly affecting our community, we found we already had a resource available for people looking for an easy, efficient way to help.” Foodservice facilities are currently accepting no-contact donations with safe measures in place. Additionally, organizations that can implement social distancing measures are seeking volunteers. Residents looking to get involved can use the website to locate a facility nearest to them and call to inquire about donating or volunteering time with the organization. “We’re dedicated to continuing to be here for the most vulnerable in our community, so we’ll keep our doors open as long as possible,” Jessica Roadman, of Crossroads Urban Center, said in a statement. “We are facing increased demands with decreased resources. Wall Street pauses after April’s surge, airline stocks fall

Stock indexes are down slightly in afternoon trading on Wall Street Monday, as the market takes a pause following its best month in decades. Airline stocks had some of the market’s sharpest losses after famed investor Warren Buffett said he’d dumped all his shares in the four biggest U.S. carriers. A ramping up of tensions between the Trump administration and China over the origins and handling of the coronavirus pandemic also weighed on markets around the world. Costco is limiting how much meat customers can buy

Costco on Monday became the latest retailer to implement purchasing limits on fresh meat because of the slowdown at processing plants during the coronavirus pandemic. NFL moving London, Mexico City games back to US stadiums

The NFL is moving its five games scheduled for London and Mexico City this season back to U.S. stadiums because of the coronavirus pandemic. All five regular-season games will be played at the stadiums of the host teams. Scheduled were two home games for the Jacksonville Jaguars at Wembley Stadium in London and two at Tottenham’s new facility, with the Atlanta Falcons and Miami Dolphins as hosts. The Arizona Cardinals were to be the home team for the game at Azteca Stadium in Mexico City. — Associated Press

Utah sees 142 new cases of COVID-19, no new deaths

Utah’s total number of COVID-19 cases has increased by 142 from Sunday, with no new reported deaths, according to the Utah Department of Health. Monday’s totals give Utah 5,317 confirmed cases, with 441 total hospitalizations and 50 total deaths from the disease. Previously, there were 5,175 cases in the state. The new numbers indicate a 2.7% increase in positive cases since Sunday. Of the 124,661 people tested in Utah so far, 4.3% have tested positive for COVID-19. — Jacob Klopfenstein, KSL.com

Provo will 'proceed with caution' in move to moderate COVID-19 risk zone as economy begins reopening

The city of Provo will “proceed with caution” as its economy slowly reopens amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Mayor Michelle Kaufusi announced the city’s new plan Monday, complete with traffic-style signs outlining guidelines as the city moves from high to moderate COVID-19 risk. The state announced a similar change last week. City parks and recreation facilities will open Tuesday at their normal times, including the city recreation center, Peaks Ice Arena, Covey Center for the Arts and Provo Shooting Sports Park, Kaufusi said. The Provo City Library is not physically open, but a curbside delivery program is available. All city customer service desks will reopen Tuesday with strict hygiene guidelines in place, the mayor said. Provo’s senior programming will not resume until the city is in the yellow risk zone, Kaufusi added. People are still advised to practice social distancing and good hygiene, and to follow the other public health guidelines set forth by the state and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Kaufusi said. The city is ready to cautiously move forward but has contingencies in place in case the situation takes a turn for the worse. “At the drop of a hat, we will pull back if we need to pull back,” Kaufusi said. Hundreds of people are rolling up their sleeves in countries across the world to be injected with experimental vaccines that might stop COVID-19, spurring hope — maybe unrealistic — that an end to the pandemic may arrive sooner than anticipated. About 100 research groups are pursuing vaccines with nearly a dozen in early stages of human trials or poised to start. It’s a crowded field, but researchers say that only increases the odds that a few might overcome the many obstacles that remain. “We’re not really in a competition against each other. We’re in a race against a pandemic virus, and we really need as many players in that race as possible,” Dr. Andrew Pollard, who is leading the University of Oxford’s vaccine study, told The Associated Press. — Associated Press

Supreme Court meets by phone

It's a morning of firsts for the Supreme Court, the first time audio of the court's arguments will be heard live by the world and the first arguments by telephone. The changes are a result of the coronavirus pandemic, which has made holding courtroom sessions unsafe, especially with six justices aged 65 or older and at risk of getting seriously sick from the virus. The experiment beginning Monday could propel the court to routinely livestream its arguments. Or the 10 cases over six days could just be extraordinary exceptions to the court's sustained opposition to broadening the audience that can hear, if not see, its work live. — Associated Press
