(AP Photo/Al Grillo) Everyone knows that McCain will win Utah. He is up by 36 points. Also, Gov. Huntsman and Attorney Gen. Shurtleff will coast to easy victories as well. With all of the controversy, the Treasurer's race could have been a real opportunity for the Democrats to pick up a state-wide elected office. But their candidate has shown little interest in running a campaign. Therefore, Richard Ellis will win big.
The three most interesting races in the state are all in Salt Lake County. Democrat Karen Morgan is challenging incumbent Sen. Carleen Walker in for her seat in the state senate. Jay Seegmiller is making his third run at Speaker Greg Curtis. And Mark Crockett is in the race of his political life to hold his seat on the County Council. The results in these three races will show which party was able to get out the vote where it really counted. If Crockett loses, the Democrats will wrestle control of the county council. If Curtis loses, he will be the first speaker of the house to not be reelected. If Walker loses, it will show that the Democrats are continuing to spread their influence along the east bench.
In what might be described as an otherwise boring election cycle in Utah, these are the races I will be watching very closely on Tuesday night.
