SALT LAKE CITY — Defensive tackle John Penisini becomes the seventh player from the University of Utah to be drafted in the 2020 NFL Draft.
Penisini was selected No. 197 overall in the sixth round of the draft Saturday to the Detroit Lions. He's the team's seventh pick of the draft, and the third defensive player drafted to the team this season.
Penisini joins former Utah teammates Jaylon Johnson, Julian Blackmon, Zack Moss, Terrell Burgess, Leki Fotu and Bradlee Anae drafted so far this year. Penisini was one of the more unheralded members of the defense, but was a consistent contributor and threat to opposing offenses.
The 6-foot-1, 318-pound native of West Jordan helped lead Utah to a No. 3 rush defense his senior season. He was named a two-time second team All-Pac-12 and had 22 starts with the Utes.
Penisini finished his senior season with 38 tackles and two forced fumbles, which tied for the team lead.
