TEMPE, Ariz. (AP) — Bobby Winkles, the baseball coach who built Arizona State into a national power from scratch and went on to manage and coach in the majors, has died. He was 90. Arizona State said Winkles died Friday with family and friends by his side. Winkles fielded the Sun Devils’ first varsity squad in 1959 and won national titles in 1965, 1967 and 1969. He went 524-173 in 13 years in Tempe.Winkles was a charter member of the College Baseball Hall of Fame and coached such stars as Reggie Jackson, Rick Monday, Sal Bando, Larry Gura and Gary Gentry. Winkles went on to manage four years in the majors, going 170-213 in stints with the California Angeles and Oakland Athletics from 1973-78.

NEW YORK (AP) — Sabrina Ionescu was the No. 1 pick in the WNBA draft Friday night, going to the New York Liberty. The Oregon Ducks star, who set the NCAA record for triple-doubles, was the first college player to have over 2,000 points, 1,000 rebounds and 1,000 assists in her career. Ducks teammate Satou Sabally, one of three juniors to forego their last year of college eligibility and enter the draft, went second to Dallas. It’s the third time in the history of the draft that the top two picks were teammates in college.

SEATTLE (AP) — New Washington offensive coordinator John Donovan was already stepping into a challenging situation before college football was thrown off course by the coronavirus pandemic. It had been nearly five years since he last coached on a college campus and he was installing a new offense for the Huskies without knowing who his quarterback would be when the new season rolled around. Donovan has now taken his teaching and evaluation online with the Huskies unable to have spring practice. It's another obstacle in making the QB decision.
