SALT LAKE CITY — The body of a man was found inside a pipe behind a Salt Lake store on Friday.

Now police are trying to figure out who the man is and how he got inside the pipe.

The body was discovered about 10 a.m. behind a Target store near 1110 S. 300 West, said Salt Lake police detective Greg Wilking. The body was inside a pipe with an 18-inch diameter, the opening of which is above ground, but leads to more piping that is underground.

The body was stuck in a section of the pipe that was underground, Wilking said. The man’s head could be seen by looking inside the pipe, he said.

With help from the Salt Lake City Fire Department, authorities were able to get the man’s body out of the pipe without having to dig it up, Wilking said. Some other items were also found in the area that may have belonged to the victim.

The name of the man, how long he had been in the pipe, and how he died were all questions police were still investigating on Friday.
