IN THE NEWS: ONLINE SITES DEMAND HALT TO COMPANY COLLECTING IMAGES
UNDATED (AP) — Facebook has become the latest online company to try to get a facial recognition company from sweeping the images of ourselves many of us put on social media. The world’s largest social networking site has demanded that the company Clearview AI stop siphoning off user images to identify people — and then sharing their findings with police. The New York Times and Buzzfeed have been reporting that Clearview AI has been matching the photos with information gleaned from social media to identify people. YouTube, Twitter and the payment service Venmo have also demanded that Clearview cut it out.
IN THE NEWS: FACEBOOK SHUTTERS PAGE OF ANTI-SEMITIC GROUP
TRENTON, N.J. (AP) — Authorities in New Jersey say they’re pleased that Facebook has shut down the public page of a group they’ve identified as anti-Semitic. Governor Phil Murphy says the Facebook diminishes the reach of a group called Rise Up Ocean Counted. The group says it focuses on development in the shore community, but several posts on the site betrayed anti-Jewish sentiments. Social media sites like Facebook have been under pressure to shut down sites run by people or groups who espouse hateful or violent views.
ON THE WEB: MACY’S CLOSINGS
CYBERSPACE (AP) — Another major retailer is succumbing to the ever-growing trend of people shopping online, rather than going into stores. This time, it’s the iconic department store chain Macy's feeling the pressure. It has shuttered its corporate headquarters in Cincinnati, as part of a plan to close about a fifth of its retail locations nationwide. The decision will involve the closing of 125 stores — and the elimination of 2,000 corporate jobs.
