UNDATED (AP) — Hayden Fry, the Texan who revived Iowa football and became a Hawkeye State institution, has died. He was 90. Fry's family announced through the University of Iowa that the coach died Tuesday after a long battle with cancer. The native of Eastland, Texas, had never been to Iowa before taking over the Hawkeyes in 1979. The team had slogged through 17 consecutive years without a winning season. He coached at Iowa for 20 seasons, winning 238 games and three Big Ten championships. He played quarterback at Baylor and his first college head coaching job was at SMU.

COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Kaleb Wesson had 18 points and 10 rebounds as No. 5 Ohio State routed Southeast Missouri State 80-48. The Buckeyes were playing two days after they dropped an 84-71 decision at Minnesota. That loss helped drop the Buckeyes two spots from third to fifth in this week’s AP Top 25 poll. Ohio State played its second game without sophomore guard Duane Washington Jr., who was sidelined with an apparent rib injury. Andre Wesson scored 14 points, while Kyle Young and D.J. Carton each had 10 points for the Buckeyes.

ATHENS, Ohio (AP) — Eric Hunter Jr. had 18 points on 4-for-5 shooting from 3-point range and Purdue bounced back from its first conference loss to beat Ohio 69-51. Trevion Williams added 14 for the Boilermakers, who kept Ohio at bay as the Bobcats surged to begin the second half after being down by 20 at the intermission. The Bobcats got within seven points with 11 minutes left in the game but couldn't chip away any more. Purdue was playing without 7-foot-3 junior center Matt Haarms, who suffered a concussion in Sunday's loss to Nebraska.

UNDATED (AP) — Clemson's two national football championships in the last three seasons have been paying dividends on the recruiting trail. Clemson is putting together its highest-rated recruiting class ever as high school seniors across the country finalize their college selections during the early signing period that begins Wednesday. Clemson has verbal commitments from seven of the nation's top 29 prospects according to composite rankings of recruiting sites compiled by 247Sports. Clemson has never finished higher than seventh in the 247Sports Composite team recruiting rankings but currently is in first place.

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — Kansas faces the challenge of holding onto its new No. 1 ranking in the AP Top 25 men's college basketball poll when it visits No. 18 Villanova this week. The Jayhawks are the fifth different team to reach No. 1 this season. Michigan State, Kentucky, Duke and Louisville were the others. None of them won more than two games before stumbling after claiming the top spot. This week's AP Top 25 national schedule also includes a marquee matchup between No. 5 Ohio State and No. 6 Kentucky in Las Vegas on Saturday.

UNDATED (AP) — Ed Orgeron of LSU is The Associated Press Coach of the Year. He has led the top-ranked Tigers to a Southeastern Conference championship and their first College Football Playoff appearances. Orgeron received 33 of 56 votes from AP Top 25 voters. Baylor's Matt Rhule, who led the Bears to an 11-2 record and an appearance in the Big 12 championship game, was second with 14 first-place votes. Ohio State's Ryan Day finished third with five-first-place votes. Minnesota's P.J. Fleck was fourth with three first-place votes.

SAN DIEGO (AP) — Fans at the Holiday Bowl in San Diego will be asked to do the “Iowa Wave" at the end of the first quarter of the game between No. 19 Iowa and No. 22 USC on Dec. 27. The wave will be directed at patients in a children's hospital in Iowa City as well as representatives from two children's hospitals in Southern California who will be at the game. The wave will replicate what has become a game-day salute at Iowa home games to patients and family members at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children’s Hospital.
