HUNTSVILLE — Weber County Search and Rescue Lt. Mark Horton said he was up in Monte Cristo preparing for the winter season Sunday when he got a call about a group of puppies and their mother in need of rescuing.

"We don't normally go save animals, but you know if you're in the situation and you can help, well, we are happy to help," Horton said.

Kat Perry and Cory Holt found the dogs while snowmobiling in the Ant Flat area.

"Search & Rescue was able to assist by responding with a rescue sled and helping Kat and Cory with rescuing the puppies," read a Weber County Sheriff's Office Search and Rescue Facebook post.

Search and rescue, and Utah State Parks were able to help Perry and Holt rescue the three puppies; however, while Horton said they were not able to get to the mother, they are returning Monday to try and save the mom.

Horton said he does not believe this is an animal abandonment situation, the breed is typically used for sheepherding and he theorizes that the mom left the herd to give birth and the sheepherders left to avoid the storm.
