SALT LAKE CITY — Southbound I-215 shut down Monday evening after 15 vehicles crashed in the area amid snowy weather.
The highway was closed as of 10:15 p.m. at 4700 South and the Utah Department of Transportation asked drivers to use an alternate route. It has since reopened.
The multivehicle accident began about 7:37 p.m. when a crash involving nine vehicles occurred near 4700 South on southbound I-215 west belt, Utah Highway Patrol Sgt. Nick Street confirmed.
About 8:20 p.m. a second crash occurred in the same area, this time with six vehicles.
Some were injured in the accidents and others were transported to the hospital but further details about the injuries weren't immediately available.
Snowy weather hit Utah on Monday and UHP urged individuals to stay off the roads, if possible.
UHP investigated at least 270 crashes Monday and two troopers were hit but uninjured while investigating separate accidents.
