SALT LAKE CITY â Utah earned its first-ever shutout win over a Pac-12 opponent Saturday in a 35-0 win over the visiting California Golden Bears. The win, mixed with three Top 25 teams previously ranked above Utah losing, moved the Utes up in the rankings Sunday.
Utah moved up to No. 9 in the latest Associated Press Top 25 Poll, up three from its previous spot of No. 12 last week, and up to No. 10 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, up two places from its previous spot of No. 12. Utah has outscored its last four opponents 146-23 and has held its last two opponents to under 150 total yards.
Ahead of the Utes in the rankings is No. 7 Oregon, who needed a game-winning field goal to beat a Washington State team that took the lead with just one minute left to play in the game. The Ducks are ranked No. 8 in the Coaches Poll.
The Ducks and Utes are the only programs left from the Pac-12 with an outside shot at the playoffs.
Arizona State, which was previously ranked No. 24, dropped out of the Top 25 this week after falling 42-32 to UCLA on the road. The Sun Devils are still receiving votes in the Coaches Poll but not in the AP Poll. USC and Washington are the only other Pac-12 team receiving votes this week.
AP voters named LSU its new No. 1 team, the third team this season to occupy the top spot of the poll. The Tigers claimed a 23-20 win over then-No. 9 Auburn to take down its third Top 25 team this season. No other program has three wins against Top 25 teams this season.
Behind the Tigers, Alabama drops to No. 2, and they're followed by No. 3 Ohio State, No. 4 Clemson, and No. 5 Penn State. The Nittany Lions join the top five programs ranked for the first time this season after a 28-7 win over Michigan State.
Oklahoma, which was previously ranked No. 5, dropped to No. 10 after falling to Kansas State in a game where the Wildcats led by double digits for much of the second half. The Sooners managed to score a few times late to cut into the Wildcatsâ lead, but it wasnât enough as Kansas State held on for a 7-point win.
The Coaches Poll still has Alabama as its No. 1 team. The Crimson Tide are followed by No. 2 LSU, No. 3 Clemson, No. 4 Ohio State and No. 5 Penn State. Penn State and Clemson switched spots this week in the Coaches Poll.
Week 10 features two games with two ranked opponents â a Top 10 showdown between No. 6 Florida and No. 8 Georgia, and an American Athletic Conference showdown between No. 15 SMU and No. 24 Memphis.
