CHARLOTTE (AP) — Panthers general manager Marty Hurney says Cam Newton has a mid-foot sprain and he's "cautiously optimistic" the quarterback will be ready for the Sept. 8 regular season opener against the Los Angeles Rams. Newton injured his left foot in Carolina's 10-3 preseason loss Thursday night at New England. Newton was trying to avoid a sack in the first quarter when he got tripped up and landed on the turf.

SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) _ The Sacramento Kings and the NBA have announced they are taking no action against Luke Walton after not finding enough evidence during an investigation to support allegations that the coach sexually assaulted a woman. ZURICH (AP) — Washington Capitals center Evgeny Kuznetsov (kooz-NET'-sahv) tested positive for cocaine at the world championship and has been banned from the Russian national team for four years. The previous day, Russia lost in the semifinals to eventual champion Finland. The ban does not affect Kuznetsov playing for the Capitals.
