SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake teachers “overwhelmingly” voted to approve a new working agreement with the Salt Lake City Board of Education that includes a 4.1% across-the-board teacher salary increase and maintains a salary steps and lanes system that compensates teachers for education attainment and years of service.
The agreement, which must be ratified by the school board, also changes how sick and personal days are managed and increases pay for teachers who cover for absentee substitute teachers. The school board’s next meeting is Sept. 3.

Earlier this year, school district and association negotiators declared an impasse after they could not reach an accord and mutually agreed to federal mediation. A statement released Thursday said association leaders asked for mediation because the district failed to provide adequate resources to ensure the recruitment and retention of quality teachers.
The parties met with a federal mediator on July 10 and announced the same day that they had reached a tentative agreement, but agreed not to release the details until Aug. 7. An online vote was then conducted among association members.
