WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump is dangling the prospect of eventually becoming an unlikely "best friend" of Iran amid tensions with America's longtime Mideast adversary. The president's softer tone is a stark contrast to the anti-Iran rhetoric he has employed throughout his presidency. Trump told reporters Saturday that if Iran gives up its nuclear ambitions, they'll be happy and he'll be their best friend. His remarks follow his decision to pull back on a planned military strike on Iran.

LANCASTER, N.H. (AP) — The owner of a company that employs the truck driver identified as involved in a deadly collision with motorcycles has told The Boston Globe he can't reach the driver. Authorities say 23-year-old Volodoymyr Zhukovskyy was driving a pickup that collided with a group of 10 motorcycles in rural New Hampshire on Friday. Seven bikers were killed. New Hampshire Deputy Attorney General Jane Young says Zhukovskyy survived the accident and wasn't hospitalized.

HONOLULU (AP) — An eyewitness to the crash of a plane carrying sky divers in Hawaii saw the plane take flight, get 75 to 100 feet off the ground and turn away from the mountain range nearby. Steven Tickemyer says the plane started to nosedive, then flip over belly forward so that it was upside down. The aircraft then flipped over again, and hit the ground nose first. He says there was an explosion when it hit the ground. Eleven people died in the crash Friday night on Oahu's North Shore.

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — North Korea's state news agency says President Donald Trump sent leader Kim Jong Un an "excellent" letter, quoting Kim as saying he would "seriously contemplate it." The White House declined to confirm that Trump had sent a letter to Kim, but it comes as nuclear talks between the U.S. and North Korea broke down after the failed summit between Kim and Trump in February in Vietnam. Washington blamed it on excessive North Korean demands for sanctions relief.

RICHMOND, Va. (AP) — The self-avowed white supremacist who plowed his car into counterdemonstrators opposing a white nationalist rally in Virginia two years ago, killing one person and injuring dozens, is asking a judge for mercy. Defense lawyers said in a court memo that James Alex Fields Jr. should not spend his entire life in prison. Prosecutors disagree. The 22-year-old man pleaded guilty to federal hate crimes in March and is to be sentenced on Friday.
