(KSL News) One year ago today, the state-of-the-art Intermountain Medical Center opened its doors to the first patients.
Staff and several of the hospital's first patients marked the occasion in the lobby this morning with a cake.
The hospital has since treated almost 260,000 patients and 6,500 babies have been born there.
The Intermountain Medical Center has five specialty hospitals: cancer, trauma, maternity, heart patients and outpatient procedures.
It's a $560 million project on 100 acres of land.
The medical center was built for three reasons: To meet the growing needs of the southwest end of the valley, because LDS Hospital just didn't have room to grow, and Cottonwood Hospital was in need of upgrades.
The Intermountain Medical Center is at 5121 S. Cottonwood St. in Murray.
