SALT LAKE CITY — University of Utah police are searching for information after a sexual assault was attempted on campus early Saturday morning.
At 12:50 a.m., an attempted sexual assault occurred in the Stadium Lot, university officials said. The female victim, who is not affiliated with the university, was walking down 500 South near the south side of Rice-Eccles Stadium when a man with short dark hair wearing jeans and a dark jacket attempted to assault her, according to University of Utah police.
The man left the scene in a darkly-colored extended cab Toyota Tacoma and was last seen driving west on 500 South, according to university police.
U of U police Sgt. Mark Veatupu said the woman was evaluated at a hospital and was accompanied by the department's victim advocate.
Campus police are investigating the incident and have urged anyone with further information to reach out to University of Utah Campus Police at 801-585-2677. They have described the vehicle as being a blue, black or purple 1998-2002 Toyota Tacoma extended cab. A utility box mounted in the bed of the truck is also darkly-colored, and it has a bug reflector on the front hood.
University officials said to be alert of surroundings and report any suspicious activities. Students can call 801-585-2677 to arrange a courtesy escort anywhere on campus at any time.
"We have a courtesy safety escort that we provide at all hours of the day, 24/7," Veatupu said. "An officer or a police officer will escort you anywhere on campus."
Saturday's incident is the second reported assault on campus in less than a month.
Just after midnight on March 26, campus police received a report of a sexual assault that allegedly happened west of the Marriott Library about 10:30 p.m. the night before.
U. officials issued several Campus Alerts in response to the reported assault.
Both assaults remain ongoing investigations.
