SANDY — A man is dead after he shot another man in Midvale then crashed his car into an elementary school in Sandy during the ensuing police chase, officers said.

Jose Luis Garcia, 24, was driving a black Jeep Wrangler when he shot and killed Ray Paul Willie Vasquez, 40, at a Maverik gas station in Midvale Wednesday night, according to Unified Police Sgt. Melody Gray.

He then led police on a car chase that ended when his Jeep rolled and crashed into a fence at Peruvian Park Elementary School in Sandy near 1500 East and 8400 South. The crash took out about 50 feet of the fence as his Jeep came to a stop, Gray said.

When police approached the crash, they discovered Luis Garcia had a gunshot wound and was dead. Police are unsure if he shot himself before or after crashing the vehicle.

Vasquez and Luis Garcia knew each other, and the shooting in Midvale was not random, police said.

Vasquez was found guilty of two counts of sexual abuse of a child in 2008, according to court records. He was on parole when he was shot.

Classes at Peruvian Park Elementary continued Thursday, the Canyons School District tweeted. The district said it would alert parents via its emergency notification system.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
