YUMA, Ariz. (AP) — The mother of a boy who died while in U.S. custody says her son was healthy when he left Guatemala with his father on their journey hoping to migrate to the United States. The mother of 8-year-old Felipe Gomez Alonzo, Catarina Alonzo, spoke Saturday with Associated Press journalists at the family's home in a remote Guatemalan village some 250 miles west of Guatemala City. U.S. authorities say the boy was suffering from the flu when he died last Monday in Alamogordo, New Mexico.

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Donald Trump says he's at the White House waiting for Democrats to come over and make a deal on border security to end the partial government shutdown. He may have a long wait. As of Saturday there have been no recent signs of significant contact involving Republican and Democratic lawmakers and members of the Trump administration. The issue is Trump's demand for billions for his promised border wall and Democrats' refusal to support it.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — The father of a 2-year-old boy who was separated from his Yemeni mother until she successfully fought the Trump administration's travel ban to see him in the United States laid his body to rest Saturday, a day after the child was taken off life support at a hospital.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — The killing of a California police officer has rekindled the debate about the state's sanctuary law, which limits cooperation with U.S. immigration officials. Sheriff Adam Christianson led the investigation and all but blamed the law for Cpl. Ronil Singh's death. Authorities say a two-day manhunt ended with the arrest of Gustavo Perez Arriaga as prepared to flee to his native Mexico. Officials said he has previous drunken driving arrests.

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A Portland, Oregon, hotel has fired two employees it says were involved in the mistreatment of a black guest kicked out of its facility. DoubleTree Portland tweeted Saturday that the two men's "actions were inconsistent with our standards." Jermaine Massey accused the hotel of racially profiling him after a security guard called police to remove him from the lobby. Oregon Public Broadcasting reports Massey's lawyers intend to pursue legal action.
