SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — An Idaho inmate accused of sexually assaulting a woman while he was working at a wildfire base camp in Utah has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor sexual battery. Prosecutor Kevin Daniels said Monday the woman approved the plea deal so she could avoid having to testify in the case. The defendant, 28-year-old Ruben Hernandez, could face up to a year in jail and restitution when he is sentenced.

PROVO, Utah (AP) — Officials say the snowpack levels in Utah's mountains are about double what they were at the same time last year. Last year was a bad year for the snowpack, leaving the state's reservoirs low in the summer. The Daily Herald in Provo reports that hydrologist Troy Brosten that the snowpack in the Provo and Jordan river basins are on par with the 30-year average. Brosten in the Snow Survey office in Salt Lake City for the U.S. government's Natural Resources Conservation Service.

OGDEN, Utah (AP) — Uncertainty about who owns an 1881 locomotive steam engine in Ogden is complicating restoration efforts. The Standard-Examiner reports that Salt Lake City donated the engine to the state in 1979 after it sat at Liberty Park for decades. The state then moved it to Ogden for restoration. Steve Jones, president of the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society's Golden Spike Chapter, says there apparently is no paper trail documentation of those ownership changes.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The Utah Highway Patrol says two patrol vehicles were involved in collisions partly due to slick conditions on highways Wednesday. Neither crash involving Highway Patrol vehicles resulted in injury. According to the Highway Patrol, at least one of the other vehicles was being driven too fast. The Highway Patrol says that was also the case in an accident that snarled traffic when a big rig tipped over on Interstate 15 in Draper after colliding with a car going too fast for conditions.
