BOISE, Idaho (AP) — The U.S. Department of Energy, a Utah-based energy cooperative and a contractor that operates an eastern Idaho nuclear research facility has announced an agreement involving what would be the nation's first small modular nuclear reactors in eastern Idaho. The Energy Department's Office of Nuclear Energy reached the deal announced Friday with the Utah Associated Municipal Power Systems and Battelle Energy Alliance, the Energy Department contractor that operates the Idaho National Laboratory.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The family of a Utah mayor killed while serving in the National Guard in Afghanistan will have one less financial worry this holiday season after a charity paid off their mortgage. Brent Taylor's widow, Jennie Taylor, said Thursday on "Fox & Friends" that she had been worried about supporting the couple's seven children and that she's grateful the gift will help her stay home with them.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — The nameless federal courthouse in Salt Lake City could soon have a name. The Senate passed a bill Thursday to name the building the Orrin G. Hatch Federal Courthouse in honor of the outgoing senator. Hatch says he's "honored and overwhelmed" that the Senate voted to name the federal courthouse after him. The House will need to agree to the legislation and President Donald Trump will need to sign it. The House will likely take up the bill in January.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — A Utah lawmaker is proposing a measure that would hold gun owners liable if they lend out firearms used in crimes. Democratic state Rep.-elect Andrew Stoddard is calling the measure "Lauren's Law." He named the proposal after the 21-year-old University of Utah student who was shot to death in October by a man she briefly dated. Stoddard's measure aims to codify a liability to make it easier for people to pursue civil damages.
