INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Juwan Morgan scored a career-high 35 points and Rob Phinisee hit a deep, buzzer-beating 3-pointer to give the Indiana Hoosiers a 71-68 victory over Butler in the Crossroads Classic. The Hoosiers barely won their fourth straight by scrambling to get a shot off before the clock ran out. Phinisee eventually wound up with the ball in his hands and threw up the decisive 25-footer. Sean McDermott finished with 20 points for Butler, which lost for the first time since Dec. 1.
ANN ARBOR, Mich. (AP) — Charles Matthews made a layup just before halftime to give No. 5 Michigan its first lead and the smooth-shooting guard matched a season high with 25 points to help the undefeated Wolverines beat Western Michigan 70-62. Michigan is off to its best start since it was 16-0 six seasons ago. The Broncos were in control for much of the first half and led by eight points with 2:58 remaining after Michael Flowers scored 11 of his career-high 31 points in just over two minutes.
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Kaleb Wesson had a career-high 22 points and No. 15 Ohio State held off a Bucknell comeback to win 73-71. The Bison had the ball with 14 seconds left but a 3-point try by Bruce Moore hit the front of the rim and Ohio State survived. Keyshawn Woods had 13 points on 5 for 9 3-point shooting for Ohio State.
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — John Mooney scored 21 points and D.J. Harvey added 19 to lead Notre Dame past Purdue 88-80 in the Crossroads Classic. The Fighting Irish ended a two-game losing streak. Purdue has lost two straight, four of five and had a nine-game winning streak against in-state schools end. Carsen Edwards paced the Boilermakers with 27 points. Ryan Cline added 15.
MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — Top-seeded Stanford won an NCAA-record eighth national title, in five hard-fought sets over defending champion Nebraska. Kathryn Plummer had 19 kills and 10 digs and Holly Campbell added 15 kills for the Cardinal, who finished the season on a 32-game winning streak. Audriana Fitzmorris had 14 kills and Morgan Hentz had 32 digs for Stanford, which won 28-26, 22-25, 25-16, 15-25 and 15-12 despite hitting only .250. Huskers star Mikaela Foecke had a game-high 29 points in her final college match.
CHAMPAIGN, Ill. (AP) — Trent Frazier scored 25 points to lead Illinois past East Tennessee State 73-55. Giorgi Bezhanishvili scored 15 points and Kipper Nichols added 14 for Illinois (4-7).
NEWARK, N.J. (AP) — Myles Powell spent the last year growing irritated hearing how Rutgers was the best college basketball team in the Garden State. That won't be the case for the New Jersey native in 2019. Powell had a game-high 28 points, including six 3-pointers to lead Seton Hall past Rutgers 72-66 in the Garden State Hardwood Classic.
ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. (AP) — Braxton Beverly scored 18 points to lead North Carolina State to an 89-78 win over Penn State in the second of four Air Force Reserve Boardwalk Classic games at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City. Beverly was one of five players in double-figure scoring for the Wolfpack, which improved to 9-1 with its third straight win. Torin Dorn added 15 for North Carolina State. Markell Johnson and C.J. Bryce each had 13, and DJ Funderburk finished with 12.
