SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — City council members in Utah's largest city have voted to raise their own salaries by nearly $10,000 in a move they argue will allow more people from all economic backgrounds to consider serving in the future. Members of the Salt Lake City Council voted unanimously Tuesday night to raise pay to nearly $36,000, up from about $26,000. It is the first substantial raise other than cost-of-living increases in 37 years.

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Outgoing U.S. Sen. Orrin Hatch of Utah bemoaned the disappearance of political civility, kinship and cross-party collaboration during a farewell speech Wednesday where he called the Senate a legislative body in "crisis." Hatch, 84, will step down next month as the longest-serving Republican senator in history after serving 42 years. Hatch said senators must "rise above the din and divisiveness of today's politics."

UNDATED (AP) — The sister of a missing Blackfeet woman in Montana tells U.S. senators that dysfunctional investigations into missing persons' cases have troubled numerous Native American families. The testimony was part of a U.S. Senate committee hearing held to examine concerns about investigations into the deaths and disappearance of Native American women.

UNDATED (AP) — Former Vice President Joe Biden is wrapping up a busy stretch of events before stepping out of the public eye and holding private deliberations over whether he'll launch another campaign for president. That's according to multiple sources familiar with Biden's thinking. Biden's looming private reflection comes while the Democratic presidential field is in flux. While some onetime prospects have said they won't run, Texas congressman Beto O'Rourke has emerged as an unlikely potential force.
