WASHINGTON (AP) — As President Donald Trump ponders picking a new chief of staff, more names are emerging as possible contenders for the job. A person familiar with Trump's thinking tells The Associated Press that among the people being considered are the White House budget chief, Mick Mulvaney, and a Republican congressman from North Carolina, Mark Meadows. Trump says in a tweet that he'll be making a decision "soon."

WASHINGTON (AP) — Recent news on the Russia investigation and other scandals is increasing the legal pressure on President Donald Trump. Leading Democrats are raising the prospect of impeachment or almost-certain prison time for Trump if it's proved that he directed illegal hush-money payments to women. Democrats will take control of the House in January. Rep. Jerry Nadler of New York, the incoming chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, says the illegal payments are "impeachable offenses."

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — Authorities in North Carolina say a driver was killed when a tree fell on a vehicle. Police in the Charlotte suburb of Matthews said Sunday that the vehicle was traveling down a street when the tree fell on it. A passenger sustained minor injuries. Police did not immediately release the identity of the driver. North Carolina has been pummeled by a winter storm this weekend and officials have urged drivers to stay off the road.

BEIJING (AP) — China has summoned the U.S. ambassador to protest the detention of an executive of electronics giant Huawei in Canada at Washington's behest. The official Xinhua News Agency says Vice Foreign Minister Le Yucheng "lodged solemn representations and strong protests" with Ambassador Terry Branstad against the detention of Huawei's chief financial officer. Meng Wanzhou was detained while changing planes in Vancouver, Canada, last week. Her arrest has threatened to increase U.S.-China trade tensions.

PARIS (AP) — Pressure is mounting on French President Emmanuel Macron to announce concrete measures to calm protests marked by violence when he addresses the nation Monday evening. He we will be breaking a long silence widely seen as aggravating a crisis that has shaken the government and the whole country. Macron will consult in the morning with national and local officials as he tries to get a handle on the ballooning and radicalizing protest movement triggered by anger at his policies.
