HOUSTON (AP) — George H.W. Bush has been laid to rest after a week of funeral tributes and then a final train ride with thousands of Texans waving and cheering along the route. Funeral train No. 4141 – for the 41st president – carried the late president's remains to their final resting place Thursday at his presidential library in College Station, Texas.
MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Defeated Republican Gov. Scott Walker is being pressured by Wisconsin Democrats and some Republicans not to sign legislation that would strip some powers from his Democratic successor. A bipartisan group has told Walker that his legacy would be stained if he goes along with Republicans in a lame-duck session trying to weaken the next governor, Tony Evers.
SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Since President Donald Trump claimed in July he can make peace with North Korea, there have been recriminations, simmering bad blood and very little progress in getting rid of nuclear weapons. Continuing U.S. sanctions and pressure are met with anger and foot-dragging from Pyongyang, which has bluntly stated that an improvement of relations and sanctions are incompatible. One of the problems is wording: The July statement was so vague that it seemed tailor made for a stalemate.
HELENA, Mont. (AP) — A practice called 'ballot harvesting' is common in some states and involves political parties or special interest groups collecting the ballots of voters they believe are favorable to their candidates and then turning them in to elections offices. Supporters say it's a way to make sure more voters have their ballots counted, while detractors say it opens the door to voter fraud. The issue has come to national attention because of a disputed result in a North Carolina congressional race.
RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) — The Democratic candidate trailing in a North Carolina congressional race marked by an absentee fraud investigation has withdrawn his concession to the Republican. Dan McCready made his announcement Thursday in a video posted on social media. Unofficial results showed Republican Mark Harris leading McCready by 905 votes in the 9th Congressional District. But state election officials have refused to certify the results while looking at potential absentee ballot irregularities.
