SALT LAKE CITY — Police have identified and arrested a man they say assaulted his girlfriend's teen son after the boy refused to let him in the house Thursday evening.

Jon Kasai, 40, was booked into the Salt Lake County Jail Thursday on suspicion of child abuse, assault and intoxication, according to an emailed statement from Salt Lake police.

The man arrived intoxicated at his girlfriend's apartment at 90 E. 600 South Thursday evening, but she was not home. Her son, who is 14 or 15 years old, was in the home with his younger sister and refused to let the man in, according to Salt Lake Police Lt. Russ Amott.

The children's mother got home shortly before 7 p.m. and let her boyfriend into the house, unaware there had been an earlier confrontation between him and her son, Amott said.

When the boyfriend entered the home he "immediately assaulted" the teen, according to Amott.

"All we can determine right now is that the adult male was intoxicated and was upset that he wasn't let into the apartment," Amott said.

The teen attempted to defend himself with a knife but was cut during the struggle, and the man was stabbed. Both were transported to local hospitals with minor injuries.

Kasai was booked into jail after he was released from the hospital.
