BLACKSBURG, Va. (AP) — Nickeil Alexander-Walker and freshman Isaiah Wilkins scored 21 points apiece, and No. 15 Virginia Tech opened its season with an 87-59 win over Gardner-Webb. Kerry Blackshear Jr. added 14 points for the Hokies, who allowed Gardner-Webb to keep it close until after halftime. Nate Johnson scored 17 points to lead the Runnin' Bulldogs, who crept within four points less than five minutes into the second half. Virginia Tech responded with an 8-0 run and then pulled away.

ELON, N.C. (AP) — Cameron Johnson and freshman Nassir Little scored 21 points apiece, and No. 8 North Carolina routed Elon 116-67. Freshman Coby White added 14 points to help the Tar Heels sweep their two-game, season-opening barnstorming tour of regional mid-majors. They won at Wofford earlier this week and helped Elon christen its new $40 million on-campus arena.

ATLANTA (AP) — Brandon Alston scored 17 points and Jose Alvarado scored 12 of his 14 points in the second half to lead Georgia Tech to an 88-69 win over Lamar. Alston and Alvarado each made a pair of 3-pointers down the stretch as Georgia Tech (1-0) made 12 from beyond the arc, the most the Yellow Jackets have made in a game since coach Josh Pastner was hired before the 2016-17 season.

CLEMSON, S.C. (AP) — David Skara scored 16 points and No. 22 Clemson used a fast start to run past North Carolina Central 71-51. Skara scored in double figures for the second straight game after doing so only once for the Tigers last season. Clemson made its first eight shots to take a double-digit lead in the first eight minutes.

BOSTON (AP) — The best Boston College team in a decade is standing in the way of No. 2 Clemson's fourth straight trip to the Atlantic Coast Conference championship game and perhaps a fourth trip in a row to the College Football Playoffs. No. 17 BC is hoping to have running back A.J. Dillon back for Saturday night's game in Chestnut Hill.

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — No. 3 Notre Dame plays its final home game of the season Saturday night against Florida State. The Irish are expected to start Brandon Wimbush at quarterback for the injured Ian Book. The Seminoles may go with Deondre Francis, though James Blackman had a good outing in last week's loss at North Carolina State. Florida State is 4-5 this season. Notre Dame is 9-0 and hoping to land in the college football playoff.

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) — Chris Lykes scored a career-high 22 points as Miami opened its season with an 83-62 victory over Lehigh. The Hurricanes built an 18-point lead midway through the first half then withstood a Mountain Hawks rally that cut Miami's advantage to 53-47 with 12:24 remaining in the second half.

MIAMI (AP) — Miami Hurricanes forward Dewan Hernandez is sitting out the start of the season as the school and the NCAA review his eligibility in the wake of a federal investigation into college basketball corruption. The school announced shortly before the tipoff of the team's opener against Lehigh that Hernandez would not play. Hernandez considered turning pro before he decided to return to Miami for his junior season.
