OREM — A 49-year-old man died from his injuries after he was shot by a homeowner during a confrontation Monday morning, police said.
The homeowner told police he heard a noise coming from his detached garage near 400 North and 800 West about 7 a.m., according to Orem Police Lt. Craig Martinez.
The homeowner then grabbed a handgun and confronted the 49-year-old man who was in the garage, Martinez said. The homeowner then shot the intruder multiple times after a confrontation in the garage, according to Martinez.
The 49-year-old man, whose name was not immediately released, was taken to a hospital in critical condition with a gunshot wound to the abdomen, but later died from his injuries, police said. They added the man was from the neighborhood.
Police are investigating the incident. Martinez said there was no reason to believe the homeowner was out of his right to defend himself with deadly force. Martinez also urged any neighbor with doorbell video that may help in the investigation to contact police.
"Right now, we have nobody in custody. We're not looking for anybody else. We're going through the process of going through some interviews, processing the crime scene," he said. "We should be finished up with our investigation here in the next couple of days."
Once the investigation is completed, the department will send the report to the Utah County District Attorney's Office which will decide whether or not to press charges.
