SALT LAKE CITY — A crash forced temporary closure of the ramp between southbound I-15 and eastbound I-80 in Salt Lake City, and heavy rains on southbound I-15 near Lehi and state Route 20 in Iron County caused delays Wednesday morning, officials said.

I-15/I-80 ramp

A semitruck hauling frozen food was heading south on I-15 about 4:30 a.m. when it entered the ramp to I-80, and the driver lost control. The truck hit the right side barrier wall and ignited, Utah Department of Transportation officials said.

The driver and co-driver of the semitruck exited the vehicle before it became fully engulfed in flames. The driver was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were non-life threatening, officials said.

The ramp closed soon after and opened several hours later at 1 p.m. after crews had completed a lengthy cleanup process.

Delays from the closure extended all the way back to the Davis County border into Salt Lake around 3300 South, according to the KSL Traffic Center.

The cause of the crash has not yet been determined, according to Utah Highway Patrol officials.

Southbound I-15 near Lehi

Heavy rains in Lehi created potholes on what crews say is a section of older pavement on southbound I-15, according to UDOT officials.

About 25 vehicles damaged their tires on the potholes. Utah Highway Patrol officials said they helped change the tires, and UDOT will foot the bill for any damage. Officials ask commuters to slow down in the area.

Crews were working to repair the potholes and closed the left three lanes for several hours Wednesday morning. The lanes reopened about noon, according to the KSL Traffic Center. However, commuters still face major delays in the area.

This is the second time in a week that this section of road has been an issue for commuters. Rain ruined some overnight road repairs on southbound I-15 near Lehi Friday, causing serious delays at the Point of the Mountain.

State Route 20

Heavy rains caused the closure of both directions of state Route 20 in Iron County just 10 miles east of I-15 about 8:30 a.m., according to UDOT officials. The road reopened about 9 a.m.

Editor's note: A previous headline referred to the Tuesday morning commute. That has been corrected to Wednesday morning. The story has also been corrected to say that state Route 20 opened about 9 a.m., not after noon.
