LOGAN — A man who pleaded guilty in July to groping two girls at a Utah State University party earlier this year was sentenced to 30 days in jail, according to court records.

Sheldon Louis Gray, 24, of Midvale, pleaded guilty to two counts of sexual battery, a class A misdemeanor, on July 31 in relation to the February incident.

Gray was charged with four counts of sexual battery in 1st District Court on Feb. 12, a day after the incident, which was witnessed by a USU police officer, court records state. The charges state the victims were under 18, although the girls' ages were not released.

In his guilty plea, it stated that Gray “touched the buttocks of two girls at the party and should have known it would cause affront or alarm.” Two of the four charges were dropped.

The Herald Journal reported Gray told the court he didn't remember the incidents at the event, but other witnesses claimed to have seen him touch the girls.

Prosecutors argued Gray should be sentenced to 90 days in jail, while the defense argued Gray should be allowed work release or home confinement. However, Judge Kevin Allen sentenced Gray to 30 days in the Cache County Jail, fined him $750 and placed him on probation for 36 months.

He was also ordered to receive psycho-sexual evaluation and write a letter of apology.

Gray was booked in jail Saturday.
