SALEM — A Boy Scout leader drowned after he tried to save a child who was struggling in the water at Salem Ponds, officials confirmed.
The 25-year-old man drowned on Wednesday evening, according to Salem Police Department officials. The child was not injured, officials said.
The scout leader went into the pond to help the child, but went under the water and did not resurface. First responders located the man 50 minutes later about 12 feet under water, officials said.
The man was transported to a nearby hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police did not identify the man or the child involved.
"It's unfortunate, it really is," said Salem Police Chief Brad James. "Obviously, the leaders are shook up. The scouts are shook up. And we may not know for sure why he went under."
No other information about the drowning was immediately available.
