CEDAR CITY — The post-college life of former BYU post Jamal Aytes started with basketball, at the 3X3U National Championship, a tournament of three-on-three teams across the country.
But basketball will continue for Aytes, who finished his college career at Southern Utah.
Aytes signed a pro contract with Starwings Basel in the Swiss Basketball League, SUU announced Tuesday, sending the once UNLV signee to Europe for his first job.
In his lone season with the Thunderbirds, Aytes led the team with 168 rebounds and averaged 12.7 points per game, the second-best mark on the team.
He scored a career-high 27 points against Boise State on Nov. 12, 2017, and shot 58 percent from the field.
Aytes appeared in 50 games across two seasons at BYU, averaging just 2.1 points and 1.2 rebounds in 5.8 minutes per game as a junior in 2016-17.
The 6-foot-6, 240-pound post from San Diego started his college career at UNLV, where he played just 9.3 minutes per game before transferring to BYU after his freshman season.
At Starwings, Aytes will join former SUU wing A.J. Hess, who averaged 11.7 points per game in three seasons at SUU before finishing his career by leading South Dakota to the NCAA Tournament in 2017.
He seems to be thriving in Switzerland, if YouTube highlight reels are to be believed.
