SALT LAKE CITY — A ninth-grade student was arrested Thursday morning after another student alerted a teacher to him bringing a gun to school, Salt Lake City School District officials said.
The student, a boy whose name and age was not released, was taken into custody by Salt Lake police, according to Yándary Chatwin, a spokeswoman for the Salt Lake City School District.
Chatwin said the gun was found in his waistband and was not loaded when it was confiscated. However, the boy did have ammunition in his pocket, she said.
Officers apprehended the boy and he was booked into a juvenile detention facility, Salt Lake police detective Keith Horrocks said.
The boy may have been holding the gun for a friend, Chatwin added. She said the school's principal sent an email to parents to let them know that it didn't appear the boy intended to harm any other students at the school.
