SALT LAKE CITY (AP) -- The number of people applying for subsidized housing in Utah is up.

Since the beginning of the year, the number of people applying to the Salt Lake City housing authority for discounted places to live has increased by one-third.

As the economy has worsened, more people are turning to subsidized housing for help despite lengthy waiting lists.

The Section 8 program has 4,400 people on the wait list. All housing programs have a total waiting list of about 7,000 people.

Even people with vouchers for housing are sometimes unable to find a place to live.
