SALT LAKE CITY — A pedestrian is in critical condition after being hit by a vehicle early Wednesday morning, causing the closure of the 600 South off-ramps, officials said.

The ramp reopened around 8 a.m.

A car hit a man who was crossing the street near 400 West and 600 South just before 5 a.m., according to Salt Lake police Sgt. Brandon Shearer.

"It looks like he may have been in the crosswalk but it's unknown if he was crossing with or against the light," Shearer said.

The pedestrian was taken to a hospital by ambulance and the driver is cooperating with police.

Motorists were advised to take alternate routes to downtown Salt Lake City.
