SALT LAKE CITY — Utah men’s basketball added a fifth member to its 2018 recruiting class. The Utes announced Wednesday that Lahat Thioune, a 6-foot-11 forward, signed his national letter of intent and will officially join the Runnin' Utes in the fall.

Thioune, who is originally from Dekar, Senegal, played at Florida Prep High School for two seasons. This past season, Thioune averaged 14 points and eight rebounds per game. Thioune led his high school team to the FHSAA Class 2A state semifinals and finished the season with a 25-6 overall record.

“We are excited to have Lahat join our program,” Utah coach Larry Krystkowiak said in a released statement. “With his ability to run the floor, block shots and rebound, he brings a great deal of balance to this year’s class. Lahat has a motor and upside that we are excited to coach but, more important, he’s a phenomenal young man with a great attitude that our fans and community will enjoy.”

The Florida big man received offers from New Mexico, Iowa State, UNLV, and Louisville.

Thioune will be joining a talented 2018 recruiting class that includes four-star recruit Timmy Allen from Mesa, Arizona; four-star forward Riley Battin from Oak Park California; three-star guard Naseem Gaskin from Oakland, California; and college transfer Charles Jones Jr. from College of Southern Idaho.

Jones Jr. was recently named the 2017-18 Spalding NJCAA Division I Men’s Basketball Player of the Year Thursday after leading his team Southern Idaho to the national championship game. During the national title run, Jones averaged 24.2 points per game.
