BYU Moves Up in AP, Harris and BCS

PROVO, Utah (Oct. 26, 2008) — BYU (7-1) moved up one spot in The Associated Press Top 25 this week to No. 17 while maintaining that same ranking in the USA Today Coaches Poll. The Cougars jumped two spots to No. 15 in the Harris Poll and improved one spot to 20th in the Bowl Championship Series standings.

The top-four teams are the same in the polls and BCS standings with top-ranked Texas followed by Alabama, Penn State and Oklahoma. Texas Tech rounds out the top five in the coaches' and Harris rankings while Florida occupies the fifth spot in AP and USC is No. 5 in the BCS.

Three Mountain West Conference teams rank in the top 20. Utah (8-0) is ranked No. 9 in the coaches' poll and No. 10 in Harris, AP and the BCS. TCU (8-1) is No. 12 in AP and USA Today and No. 13 in Harris and the BCS. Utah is the highest-ranked team from a conference without automatic qualification into a BCS bowl.

The highest ranked team representing each Division I conference in the BCS standings are No. 1 Texas (Big 12), No. 2 Alabama (SEC), No. 3 Penn State (Big Ten), No. 5 USC (Pac-10), No. 10 Utah (MWC), No. 11 Boise State (WAC), No. 15 Florida State (ACC), No. 16 Ball State (MAC), No. 18 Tulsa (Conference USA), and No. 23 South Florida (Big East). No team from the Sun Belt Conference is in the BCS top-25 standings.

BYU has won 28 of its last 31 games and been ranked each week since cracking the polls on Nov. 18, 2007. BYU opened the 2008 season ranked No. 17 in the USA Today Coaches Poll and No. 16 in The Associated Press Top 25.

This week the Cougars travel to Fort Collins, Colo., to face Colorado State in a 4 p.m. kick being televised nationally on The Mtn.
