SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Utah Gov. Gary Herbert will have surgery to remove kidney stones on Friday.
Herbert's spokesman Paul Edwards confirmed the scheduled surgery Wednesday night after Herbert's State of the State speech.
Edwards said in a text-messaged statement that the Republican governor has been in pain but in good spirits and insisted on delivering the annual speech before Utah lawmakers.
His surgery late afternoon on Friday will follow a packed schedule of meetings.
Herbert will be under anesthesia during his procedure and the governor's powers will be temporarily transferred to Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox.
