SALT LAKE CITY — A woman was shot in the neck after a vehicle pulled up next to the car she was riding in and started shooting late Friday night, police said.

A car was driving south on I-15 near 1000 South and 2000 South when another vehicle pulled up beside it and started shooting, said Utah Highway Patrol Trooper Jared Cornia. An unknown number of shots were fired into the car, which had a female driver and female passenger. The passenger was shot in the neck, Cornia said.

The female driver drove to Intermountain Medical Center in Murray, where the passenger was treated and is expected to fully recover, he said.

The driver of the vehicle fled from the hospital after giving false information but police were able to track her down a short while later.

"Other than being a victim of the shooting, troopers just wanted to talk to her to see what was going on," Cornia said. "From what I understand, she was either on probation or parole, and that’s why she ran. But other than that, she’s not involved."

I-15 was shut down for a short period Friday night as investigators looked for evidence, but was reopened later that night. The Utah Department of Public Safety's State Bureau of Investigation has taken over the investigation, Cornia said.

Police don't have any information on the make or model of the vehicle of the person who fired the gun. If anyone witnessed the shooting or has information, they are asked to call Department of Public Safety dispatch at 801-887-3800.
